“The American people will never knowingly adopt Socialism. But under the name of ‘liberalism’ they will adopt every fragment of the Socialist program, until one day America will be a Socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.”

A tale of two cultures

Regular reader David writes in with his take on the flooding in the Midwest....

Questions on the Flooding in Iowa:

The below is so very true.

-Where are all of the Hollywood celebrities holding telethons asking for
help in restoring Iowa and helping the folks affected by the floods?

-Where is all the media asking the tough questions about why the federal
government hasn't solved the problem? Asking where the FEMA trucks (and
trailers) are?

-Why isn't the Federal Government relocating Iowa people to free hotels
in Chicago?

-When will Spike Lee say that the Federal Government blew up the levees
that failed in Des Moines?

-Where are Sean Penn and the Dixie Chicks?

-Where are all the looters stealing high-end tennis shoes and big screen
television sets?

-When will we hear Governor Chet Culver say that he wants to rebuild a
'vanilla' Iowa, because that's the way God wants it?

-Where is the hysterical 24/7 media coverage complete with reports of
cannibalism?

-Where are the people declaring that George Bush hates white, rural
people?

-How come in 2 weeks, you will never hear about the Iowa flooding ever
again?

The self reliance shown by people of the mid-west stands so far apart
from the 'people' in New Orleans that were in the same situation.

Also, there was/is zero looting. I have pretty much given up hope for
the 'victims' of that culture. Welfare has reduced them to what they
are today.

Sad, very, very sad...

Good questions all. I'm sure most Americans are asking themselves the same thing. In asking these questions, David indelicately points out the differences in population behavior between those who are self reliant, independent, responsible citizens and those who are shiftless, dependent, criminal-minded, wards of the State, when it comes to dealing with disaster. In case you haven't made the connection, when true conservatives control government you get more of the mid-western culture and when liberals control government you get more New Orleans. Think before you vote.

Let us compare some numbers.

Percent of Iowa that is African American: <5%

Percent of New Orleans that is African American: about 66%

You can correlate the two different tragedies and the numbers however you want. I would like to believe that race makes no difference, but i think it makes all the difference. How else would you explain the two extremes in help these two places got if not by race? They are almost identical. Levees broke, the place was flooded, yet New Orleans got lots of attention and help, Iowa is already old news.

Being African-American doesn't make one more likely to become a criminal than being Chinese makes you more likely to be a Kung-Fu master. There are plenty of African-Americans in Iowa, Missouri, etc, and they never turned to criminal behavior when their town was flooded. David's and my critique of New Orleans is about life-style, not race. A life-style of shiftless dependence versus a life-style of self reliance and independence. The residents of New Orleans happend to be black but, that had no relation to their behavior in my opinion. It was their life-styles that defined their post-Katrina behavior. White people living the same life-style would have behaved the same way. You can't criticize somebody's race, only their behavior choices.

Would it be better to classify the people in New Orleans as Urban and the people in Iowa as Rural? I was simply giving a statistic. It is remarkably similar to Imus' comments. I am not saying being black makes you act this way. It's not that they are programmed to act that way, but with what Imus said, you can't deny the statistics either. The majority of them are brought up to act the way they do. Anyone is capable, and under those circumstance, will do exactly what the people in New Orleans did with looting and living off of welfare in a post Katrina New Orleans. I still beg the question: How do you explain why the two floods got two completely different outcomes, with vast amounts of help going to New Orleans, and almost no help that i have seen so far, to Iowa?

You mean like the way African-American slaves were taught to be self-reliant?

Like that?

Really?

And then stuffed into cities or "rural" areas where the best you can do is make and sell turpentine?

Like that?

I'll be in the bar while you figure this out.
