Longshoremen who strike should be fired
Having learned nothing from the Hostess union workers who struck themselves right out of cushy jobs, the longshoremen of the International Longshormen's Association are threatening a general strike at three ports in Portland if their demands aren't met. Portland is one of the nation's primary receiving cargo ports and a shutdown would be catastrophic involving millions in undelivered cargo. Many carriers are already rerouting cargo to other ports to avoid the uncertainty, and will probably not return.
Union people are so stupid that they'd rather their employer go out of business entirely and themselves be without jobs, than give in and accept reasonable salaries and benefits.
But then union workers aren't know for common sense and intelligence, just laziness, thuggery, and entitlement.
Longshoremen are as important to a vibrant American economy as air-traffic controllers are. President Obama should threaten to fire every one of the ILA members if they strike the way Reagan did the PATCO guys. But he won't, he owes unions too much.
