Even craven democrats recognize that giving people back some of their money will stimulate a sluggish economy on the brink of a recession. Normally, democrats like Nancy Pelosi would whine that it's tax cuts for the rich. But to her credit, she's giving in on her damand for an expansion of the food-stamp and welfare handout programs, as long as anybody who has a job and receives a regular paycheck gets the proposed $300 tax rebate.
Any other time, I would point out that tax cuts are for people who pay taxes, and that to give to someone who doesn't pay taxes a tax rebate amounts to a handout, not a rebate. But I don't think the federal government should be in the business of punishing people who're working and making a paycheck. It should be in the business of punishing people for not working. So, as weird as it feels, I have to agree with Pelosi on this one. Anybody who has a job should receive the rebate to spend anyway they like, regardless of how much or how little they pay in taxes.
