Was I the only one weirded out by the creepy Olympic opening ceremony? I didn't get it.
What I did get, among the confusing self-congratulation by the host country regarding its credit for the progress of western civilization from agrarian to industrial and finally to an information-based culture, was a disturbing idolatry of their NHS system of free health care. With writhing children in hospital beds attended by prancing nurses and an enormous bust of a baby, you'd think the formerly great Britain had invented the practice of medicine altogether, rather than the economic collapse that surely comes with providing it for free to everyone. I'll give them credit for that.
That Matt Lauer and his co-host had to narrate it to me is a testament to the weirdness of it.
