US federal law prohibits the continuation of foreign aid in the case of a military coup. Here's the pertinent phrase from the Foreign Assistance Act,
“...restricts assistance to the government of any country whose duly elected head of government is deposed by military coup or decree.”
On Tuesday, a khaki-clad, beret sporting, Egyptian general seized Egyptian TV to announce that Mohammad Morsi was no longer President.......sounds like a coup to me. The question now is what contortions Obama will undergo in parsing the words of the F.A.A. in order to to continue to send hundreds of millions to Egypt?
