“The American people will never knowingly adopt Socialism. But under the name of ‘liberalism’ they will adopt every fragment of the Socialist program, until one day America will be a Socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.”

Heh, heh...stupid wind turbines freeze up in winter....when they're needed the most

Heh, heh...stupid wind turbines don't work in the cold. The state of Minnesota spent $3.3million on a bunch of windmills to supplement their power needs but, the grease that lubricates the rotation shaft gels up at extremely low temperatures, rendering the turbines useless at a time of year when electricity is needed most.

Here's a possible solution: To keep the staggeringly inefficient wind turbines from freezing up during the 6 months of Minnesota winter, the state should install, at great cost, equally inefficient solar panels. These would generate electricity to power the heaters to keep the lubrication warm. The only problem is that in Minnesota, IT SNOWS IN WINTER...A LOT! What's supposed to keep the snow off the solar panels? Wait, I know. Each wind turbine will have a bicycle-powered generator nearby and the homes who benefit from the turbine will have to volunteer members to sit outside in shifts and furiously pedal to generate heat that will keep the snow off the solar panels, which will power the electric heaters which will keep the turbine lubrication warm.

See? Hippie ingenuity will save countless polar bears. Untold Minnesotans will spend winters huddled together in the dark, miserable and freezing but, as long as man-eating polar bears thrive, hippies' intentions are all that matter.

Well, you know they can't put these things where they might make some sense, like Cape Cod, because it would spoil the view from the Kennedy Compound.

Right you are Bill. Liberals impose their idiotic world view on everybody else but, the rules don't apply to them.

First: I have a patent on an Hybrid Solar Heater, (Sun & Wind), which takes into account freezing weather!
A simple solution to the freeze-up, would be for the manufacturer, to fabricate another cover around the hub ONLY. Between the 2 covers should be a heating coil, surrounded by insulation. The heating coils should be powered by Solar cells, on the outside, of the outside cover. When the Sun is shining it would supplement the heat of the normal operation of the unit, (generator
part. When there is NO sun, the cover which encloses it, will shield the turbine cover, so the wind will not blow away any heat which is built up. The solar cells will provide some heating capability, no matter what the temperature is. I had a similar problem in N.J. I enclosed my unit in a box and installed a 60 Watt bulb. Did it do the job? There was never a freezing problem, no matter what the outside temperature sunk to, nor how hard the wind blew. In fact, in the warmer weather, the bulb had to be turned off, as it would be harmful to the motor encased therein!!

Interesting post! It's all about good solutions and its characteristics, specially if we are talking about electricity and lubrication.

Howdy! This article couldn't be written any better! Going through this article reminds me of my previous roommate! He always kept preaching about this. I most certainly will forward this article to him. Fairly certain he'll have a great read.

Thank you for sharing!

Hey Ed, really feel sad seeing you faced some unexpected disturbance with your wind turbine. Yeah, heavy frost or cold weather can cause a huge problem to the wind turbine that is responsible for low energy production. But now you will find many advanced technologies that are able to resolve the issue I do believe and hope this article reducing wind turbine maintanence will focus some hope. Thanks for sharing your unexpected experience.
