I have been a regular blood donor for my entire adult life - almost 37 years now of pints. If I had more patience, I would do platelets, which you can do more often but requires more time and takes both arms. So, I do whole blood.
Since I was in Iraq in 2010, where they have malaria and leishmaniasis, I could not donate for a year. I really missed it. Today, I resumed donating. I have to say it gives me a good feeling knowing that someone I will never meet may be alive due to my easy blood donation. And, it's actually good for men, since we tend to have too much FE in our blood.
The growing problem for blood centers is that more and more of our population cannot donate for various reasons. Much of the American military has lived in the UK or Europe too long to ever donate again. There are many other reasons, and an ever growing number of reasons.
So, if you can, please consider donating blood or platelets.

You're a natural blogger Bill, but save yourself and don't try to be as harsh as me, it'll gnaw at your soul. Its too late for me. Keep your idealistic optimism.
