It's the Constitution, stupid!

Democrats are nothing if not onerous regulators. Now in the lame-duck session Senator Harry Reid is trying to place the federal bureaucracy squarely in charge of heavily regulating the nation's food supply with the Food Safety Bill.....

A food safety bill that has burned up precious days of the Senate’s lame-duck session appears headed back to the chamber because Democrats violated a constitutional provision requiring that tax provisions originate in the House.

As any minimally astute high-school junior can tell you, only the House of Representatives, not the Senate, may raise taxes according to Article I Section 7 of the Constitution. I wonder how Harry missed that, or is it that he assumed the House would obediently raise taxes to fund his bill just because he said so? I doubt House democrats are in the mood to be told what to do by the despicable Harry Reid. Hopefully this gaffe signals the end of Reid's attempt to further inject the federal regulatory state into Americans' lives.
