As a presenter at Saturday's “Film Independent's Spirit Awards”, actress America Ferrera (IMDb page), the title role star of ABC's Ugly Betty, interjected a bit of political commentary suggesting the U.S. will not be “the land of the free” again until President Bush leaves office. Taking the stage inside a tent on the Santa Monica beach, Ferrera was joined by actor Zach Braff, a star on NBC's Scrubs, to present the award for the “Best First Feature.” In the scripted exchange, Braff asked: “So do you think that you have any traits in common with the country that is your namesake?” Ferrera replied: “I guess I'm a free-spirited person and America's supposedly the 'land of the free,' right?” She then added, to loud applause from the left coast film industry audience: “Or at least we will be in 2008.”
If miss Ferrera had studied a tad more for her immigration test, she would no doubt remember that the new president doesn't take office until the year following the election, or '09.
Ed: She is right. We are free. We have been free since the late 1700's when this country was founded. We will be free in 2008 and will be free for many years to come. Whether this little girl chooses to realize how fortunate she is to live here remains to be seen. She lives in a country where men walk a post defending our nation, allowing the blanket of freedom that lets this misguided youth express her warped and mind numbing diatribe of moronic ideas. She is not old enough to have any opinion on freedoms. Men have fought and died for many years for her to be allowed to rant and rave in this manner. I, however, would just prefer her to say thank-you to our fine military and its leaders or just to shut up. Fat and stupid is no way to go thru life.
