Indians should be embarrassed by casinos, not Victoria's Secret

Victoria's Secret hosts an annual fashion show in which lithe beauties show off the latest in lingerie, tastefully accessorized by various costumes such as this Native American head-dress.

Well, apparently at least one self-styled representative of Indian sensibilities felt it was insulting and said that it was equivalent to "spitting on Native American heritage" for them to use such a head-dress.

First, VS wasn't using it in a mocking or offensive way. If anything it was reverent and complimentary.

And second, what's more insulting to Indians, a beautiful woman accessorizing her outfit with an Indian head-dress or that the entire world now associated Native Americans with gambling, alcoholism, and indebtedness because of casinos? Does senior citizens on oxygen tanks and limited incomes pissing away their life savings at smokey, unvacuumed casinos paint a flattering image of proud, Native American culture?

How about getting people drunk on cheap, watered down drinks so they'll make poor decisions with their money in their establishments? Given the storied history of Indians and pathological alcoholism, one would think they'd be a tad sensitive about using booze to take advantage of people.

But this is how historically oppressed groups think. We are victims so anything we do, no matter how hypocritical or ridiculous, is not questionable by anybody.

  1. Good point and, as usual, well said. I've never visited an Indian casino have have no plans to, ever.

I do enjoy a stroll through a VS store however.
