Misplaced modifiers can sometimes be funny

Read this sentence from a crime report I found in the Newport, RI fish-wrapper.......

April Dawn Peters, 31, of 2194 Grandview Way, in Cosby, as arrested Sept. 19, at 10:30 p.m.,

and charged with aggravated assault after she allegedly hit a man on his head at least five

times with a hammer that she was having sex with.

Her misplaced dependent clause does suggest a funny visual in my head, but I have to wonder,
how does somebody whose writing skills are that atrocious ever graduate from journalism school? And how is this person still employed?

  1. I understand why she hit him. He demanded his hammer back and she wasn't finished with it yet.

  2. Heh heh, apparently.

I have a female FB friend who remarked about this that, "hammer sex is vastly underrated". Yikes....I don't even want to know how she knows that.
