9/11 families overstepping a tad

This is an advertisement for season 5 of MadMen. The wildly popular show is about an ad executive in Manhattan in the 60's whose life is in free-fall and out of control, thus the falling-man image.

Debra Burlingame, who publicly speaks on behalf of 9/11 families, thinks the image of a falling man plastered on a building is cruel imagery because a man jumped to his death from the North Tower on 9/11.

I'm sorry, but it's been 10 years and the association of this ad with anything related to 9/11 is purely coincidental. I hate it for the families who lost loved ones on 9/11, but they are assuming for themselves special status to have their feelings protected in the public square, in perpetuity. Every company who advertises in New York must now first assess whether the 9/11 families might construe the ad as insensitive? That's asking a lot.

  1. Madmen is a GREAT show. Too bad it has been on hiatus for 18 months while they fight over wages.

  2. Is that what's going on? I was wondering. Yeah, I like it too.

No where near enough January Jones, though. Giggity!
